What is an all on x implant denture vs. all on x implant bridge?

All on x implant denture or all on x implant bridge are similar terms that we use to describe a prosthesis that patients wear to replace an entire jaw of missing teeth. The prosthesis stays in at all times, only the dentist can remove it. The x in “all on x” is a place holder that represents the number of dental implants we plan to use. We say “x” because are not exactly sure how many implants we want to use but typically it is more than the more popular all on 4.

All on x implant denture

The all on x implant denture is typically 4 to 8 dental implants with a metal reinforced denture on top. It usually will have a metal framework of either CrCo or Ti, but today there are also polymer options as well. For the denture version we make the outside of acrylic or composite. This is what differentiates it from the all on x implant bridge, which is made of porcelain.

The advantages of the all on x implant denture are

• Cheaper to make and cheaper to fix when it breaks
• Easier for the average dentist and lab to make look nice

The disadvantages of the all on x denture are

• Not as strong or durable. Studies show half of patients with these will have a tooth break out in the first 5 years.
• Has more porosities so is not as hygienic.
• Not as esthetic but in the right lab tech hands I think the average person could not tell the difference

All on x implant bridge

The all on x implant bridge is basically a very large dental bridge that we place on dental implants. We make the entire thing out of metal and porcelain. However, some dentist today make the frameworks entirely out of the all ceramic material zirconia, so they are mostly porcelain. An example of the all on x implant bridge is this all on 6 dental implant patient.

This is an all on x patient we have that shows what things look like one year after completion with everything holding up very well.

The advantages of the all on x implant bridge are

• Can be very esthetic, more so than the all on x implant denture
• If we plan for it then any break or fracture can be treated the same as normal dentistry. For example you break a tooth and we place a new crown or bridge.

The disadvantages of the all on x implant bridge are

• The all on x implant bridge is more expensive
• It takes more skill from the lab tech and the dentist to make it look really nice.
• It is more expensive to make and is more expensive when things break.

What does the all on x implant bridge and all on x implant denture cost?

This will vary wildly depending on what you have, what you want in terms of esthetics, and who is doing it. Our all on x dental implant prosthesis ranges from about $23,000 to around $40,000. This fee assumes that we are doing the entire procedure. If you are going from one office to another and having the surgery done in one place and the denture or bridge done in our office or vice-versa, it will cost more.
